School of Maronia

The settlement of Maronia, under the Ottoman Empire, was ruled by the general meeting of residents, the elders, the Committee of the Churches and the Ephorate of Schools. Works of this period are the churches, the stone streets and the School of Maronia, donation of Hatzeas brothers, which was erected in 1908 and functioned until a few years ago, as a Primary School. At the same time, under the Ottoman Empire, public fountains are constructed, providing running water in every neighborhood and making the residents’ lives more comfortable.

The school was built from 1906 to 1908 and followed the type of neoclassical architecture. Many architectural parts from the Ancient Theater of Maronia (mainly stands) were incorporated in the building.

A preserved photograph of the four Hatzeas brothers: Stavros, Efstratios, Photios and John. They were donors and benefactors of the place. They were professionally active in Constantinople, Smyrna, Alexandria and Tripoli, they sponsored charitable projects and student scholarships while they endowed young girls from Maronia.
