Quarries of Group C

At the southern part of the peninsula there are the quarries of Group C, which are chronologically newer than the others, since they date back to the early Christian times. The area has become flat to a large extent, because large marble bulks have been removed. Moreover, the mining location of the quarries, half-processed blocks, but also traces left by the quarrying techniques and the use of lifting equipment of the marble blocks, are also visible.

At the cited drawing, the mining method and the transport of marble blocks from the quarries of Group C are depicted, as it results from the archaeological research which has been done till now. Holes on the rock prove that lifting equipment was used (cranes), to lift the marble blocks that were placed on ships. The bollards of the ships have also been located by researchers. It is obvious that the sea level was at that time, much lower than it is today.
